4-party scheme — a card payment model with four main participants: the cardholder, the merchant, the issuing bank (which issued the card), and the acquiring bank (which processes payments for the merchant). A card scheme (e.g. Visa, Mastercard, eftpos) operates the network that connects acquirers and issuers, sets the rules, and manages interchange. Most card schemes worldwide operate as 4-party schemes.
